The first week of the new year and new semester was very exciting and full of fresh ideas. While the grades of last semester were not very satisfactory, there is fresh energy and fresh ideas.
The studio practice seems to be coming together. I am ready to pick up where I left at last semester- word play, metaphors, depicting a single idea through multi drawing styles and illustration. One thing new that has entered this equation is change of material. This semester I am drawing on dinner plates. There already some images in my head, such as “Eating my heart out”, a theme from last semester, “Eat my words”, and “You are what you eat”. In the 1:1 tutorial I was reminded of my project on consumerist culture and is it not the time to start it ? While I agree with my tutor, I am wondering how I am going to make art about this. The real life experiment of not shopping for a year is all very well but how do I relate it to my work? I have never made political art and this seems like a loaded subject.
Something shall figure out.
The curatorial theory course this semester seems great and I am very excited to be starting it. We had our first seminar where we discussed Pilot Nights, a performance art initiative. It was so interesting to see how the curatorial strategy is rooted in transition and how that helps the initiative and all its ventures fresh. From artists, to curators, to venues, every aspect keeps changing hands.
Looking forward to more of these.
